Ian is a senior Queen’s Counsel in practice through Australia from Crockett Chambers in Melbourne.

He is also a Professorial Fellow in Law and Psychiatry at the University of Melbourne, an Adjunct Professor of Law and Forensic Medicine at Monash University, an Adjunct Professor in Law at LaTrobe University and an Adjunct Professor of Health Sciences at the Auckland University of Technology. He is a member of the Coronial Council of Victoria, the Mental Health Tribunal of Victoria and the Bar Council of Victoria. He was previously a member of the Medical Practitioners Board, the Psychologists Registration Board and the Disciplinary Appeals Tribunal in Victoria. Ian was the Commissioner at the Victorian law Reform Commission who ran its reference on Medicinal Cannabis.

Ian is an elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law, the Academy of Social Sciences Australia and the Australasian College of Legal Medicine. He was elected a life member of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Psychiatry, Psychology and Law and is the Editor of the Journal of Law and Medicine and the Editor -in-Chief of Psychiatry, Psychology and Law. He is the author of more than 40 books on scholarly misconduct, health law, causation, therapeutic jurisprudence, expert evidence, policing, criminal law, coronial law, and the regulation of health practitioners. He has also written more than 500 peer-reviewed scholarly articles. He is the Co-Director of the postgraduate Masters program in Health Law at the University of Melbourne and received a Doctor of Laws degree from that university. He has a long-term interest in psychiatric and psychological injuries and in the relationships between law and the mental health and the law and science.
